This couponing thing looks awesome, but where the heck do I start?
I’m sure you are looking around, and it all seems a little overwhelming. Well, it can be.
I feel like couponing is like any other skill, it has to be learned. This may sound a little silly, but it’s true. Learning about store policies, how “rolling” works, coupon lingo, what is considered a rock bottom price, and making sure you can actually find your coupons is all needed in order to maximize your couponing.
Here’s what to you can do:
Check out where to get coupons.
1. Newspapers. Some people swear this is the way to go with coupons. I actually only buy 1 big newspaper (Dallas Morning News, $3.00), and I pick up a City paper (Coppell Gazette, $0.50), and a free Social paper (QuickDFW, no cost). The big newspaper has all inserts for the week, whereas the smaller newspapers don’t carry every single insert, but usually at least have one each. Consider looking into the smaller papers and free papers around your area, you will be surprised what you find.
2. Printables. I love printing coupons off the web. If there is a coupon for something you love or a coupons for something you would buy if it was really cheap, print the coupon. Yes, paper and ink costs come into play, but I use 95% of the coupons I print, whereas a $3.00 newspaper may only get 50% use of coupons, if that.
3. eCoupons. Check on your grocery stores website to see if they offer eCoupons. This is fairly new, and the coupons actually load onto your loyalty card! How cool! No printing, no buying papers, and they are free! Cellfire, Shortcuts, and P&G eSaver are the sources of eCoupons.
4. Writing Companies. Have you ever been angry about a product or store and came home to send a nasty email to corporate? Or at least thought about it? Well, what about when you love a product?! If you love Ore-ida’s french fries, shoot them an email! Go to the contact us link on their page, put your info in and write a short “I love this stuff!” email to them. Many times they are thrilled with your response and will send you coupons! I’ve received all types of high value coupons just for doing that.

Hi!!! I love your blog!!!! And we live in Dallas as well. I myself have started using coupons. I have one question. You have mention coupon booklet, Where and went can I find those in the stores. Do they come out on the 1st of each month? Or do I have to ask for them when I go to the stores? Thanks in advance!
Hey Grace, thanks!
The Walgreens coupon booklet is available at the beginning of the month (and throughout the month) and it is right next to the weekly ads in the front of the store.
Some Walgreens cashiers actually keep a booklet at the register too, and they look for coupons to match items you’ve bought.
Let me know if you have any questions- glad you are in the Dallas area!
